Pool Safety Starts Before the First Swim

No safety feature can replace active adult supervision. Taking the right precautions can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and help ensure your backyard remains a safe place for family and friends.
Layers of Protection
The safest pools use multiple layers of protection rather than relying on a single device.
These layers include:
Constant adult supervision
Self-closing, self-latching gates
Four-sided isolation fencing
Pool alarms
Door alarms
Safety covers (when appropriate)
Swimming lessons
CPR training for parents and caregivers
Each layer provides additional protection should another layer fail.
Never Leave Children Unattended
Children can drown quickly and quietly.
Whenever children are in or around the water:
Stay within arm’s reach of young children.
Designate one responsible adult as the “Water Watcher.”

Remove Temptations Around the Pool
Children are naturally curious.
To reduce risk:
Remove toys from the pool after swimming.
Lock gates after every use.
Keep furniture away from fences so children cannot climb over them.
